In the Late Iron Age, the Tanaro route becomes the main commercial via<br \/>\nimposed by the Etruscans in the south of the river Po. This zone constitutes the northwest part of the<br \/>\nBagienni\u2019s territory; its centre was the current zone of Fossano. The Bagienni \u2013 a celtic-ligurian<br \/>\npopulation \u2013 derived their name from the beech tree (Indo-European \u2013bhagos), connected to Juppiter<br \/>\nand to the oaths.<br \/>\nDuring the Vth century BC, the Gallic populations \u2013 not necessarily hostile &#8211; began to arrive in this<br \/>\nzone: we have an interruption of the trade with the northern Etruria and Gallic cultural elements are<br \/>\nconstituted by metallic artefacts and by the morphology of some toponyms (the current village<br \/>\nVerduno, from the Gallic viro-dunum \u201cstable rock\u201d).<br \/>\nIn the following phase, the Ligurian groups took shelter in the villages; the Bagienni maintain some<br \/>\nfriendly contacts with Genoa, in opposite to the Statielli that preferred Savona. In the Second Punic<br \/>\nWar, they are allies with Romans.<br \/>\nIn this period, Alba is the most important Bagiennni\u2019s settlement: in the Ligurian language, the word<br \/>\nAlba indicates the main centre of each group.
