The floor of an Early Neolithic dwelling
The Early Neolithic dwelling consisted in an irregular cut; the indoor furnace was useful for
cooking but also for lighting and heating. It was a self-supporting structure constituted of a trunk
leaned on the soil and that converged at the peak; these trunks crossed with hazel branches. The
roofing consisted of tied swamp canes positioned in straits and fixed with willow bindings. The
smoke produced by the furnace went out from a small breach near the peak. The clay and straw
cladding in the low part of the roofing had to avoid the diffusion of the sparks.
